To be fair, they did nothing but attempt to kill him, however the choice wasn't theirs, their bodies re-animated after each death for another go at the slaughter. Another go they would have, for as long as the earth remained. Plenty new souls would arrive as well, unaware that they had sealed their fates for the rest of time.
